“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where—” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.
—so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation.
“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough
– Lewis Carrol, Alice in Wonderland.
Children are often asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The question continues to follow the child as they become a teenager, and inches closer as adulthood approaches. Everyone wants to be successful, but the word ‘success’ is used so frequently that the meaning behind it can lose clarity from time to time. Many people seek success but lack the direction to attain it. Before taking the steps necessary to achieve success, we need to think about how to define success. To some, success may mean purchasing a new car, getting a promotion at work, being fluent in a foreign language, or becoming wealthy. All of these examples are from certain areas of success, rather than looking at success from a holistic perspective. There are multiple different aspects of life to consider when striving to achieve success. Each of these areas is interdependent with one another. For example, a person can be so focused on their career that their relationships might begin to suffer, or so focused on their finances that they neglect their health. It is important to acknowledge and work on each area in order to attain a better sense of happiness and balance in life. While the number and categorization of these subjects differ from source to source, here is a list of areas to consider in no particular order:
Upon hearing the word health, many people think of the physical aspects of health, such as diet and exercise. Yet there are other areas of health to consider, such as mental health. Some people may want to improve their memory, read more, or learn another language. Emotional health is also important, as people want to be happy, optimistic, or reduce their levels of stress. Lastly, there is moral health, which is evaluating if your words and actions are in alignment with your beliefs. All of these types of health relate to success, as living a healthy life helps us work towards success and enjoy life.
What do you want to achieve financially? Perhaps you would like to purchase a new car, house, or travel around the world. Others might be working towards being free of debt or boosting their 401(k). Even if you don’t currently have any specific financial purchases in mind, establishing and adding money to a savings account can prove to be very valuable in the future. While not everyone places a huge amount of significance on money, it is valuable to be able to financially support yourself and be able to pay for an unexpected expense, such as repairs for a car or appliance, medical visits, or natural disasters.
Similar to health, people have different ideas come to mind when presented with the word ‘relationships.’ For those that have a spouse or significant other, how can you improve your romantic relationship? Just as some might first think of romantic relationships, others may think of other important relationships, such as how they can be a better friend to those they care most about. These suggestions can also be used for relationships with family members, and how you can be a better member of your family. Finally, there are also relationships with acquaintances, such as colleagues or advisors. All of these relationship areas contain roles, and by making a conscious and consistent effort to fulfill these roles to better serve the other person, your relationships with others will grow. Relationships are important for success, as well as being able to enjoy life and the people you spend it with.
People spend roughly a third of their time at work, and it is another important area to consider. Do you like your job? Or do you despise your job each day, with only a paycheck between you and complete dissatisfaction? Working toward a promotion is another popular work goal. If you are unemployed, maybe you are just trying to find a career that will help pay the bills and provide a roof over your head. If you are a student, perhaps your attention can be focused on your academic curriculum to help pave the way for a career you strive for after completing your education. Whether you are advancing in a corporate hierarchy or becoming an entrepreneur, you are going to spend a lot of time at work and should have an idea of how you would like to succeed in this regard. Having a job you enjoy will also make the time more pleasant, and the skills needed for the job become easier to cultivate and develop.
5) Sense of accomplishment
Having a sense of accomplishment is an area that many may not think of when examining the different areas. I encourage you to consider a sense of accomplishment, as it is a significant area. Looking back on life, do you feel that you have accomplished what you want to accomplish? Have you achieved the great accomplishments that you have worked towards? Would you like to build on your accomplishments, and achieve even more than ever before? If you feel a sense of accomplishment, it will help you feel successful. Having a sense of accomplishment can be difficult to attain, but is definitely worthwhile.
Similar to a sense of accomplishment, fulfillment and purpose have to do with a sense of reflection when looking back at life. It’s about finding your purpose and life and fulfilling that purpose, whatever it may be. An example of a person’s purpose might be to help others, help the environment, or care for animals. Regardless, each person’s purpose is significant and should be sought after to help attain life satisfaction and personal success.
After considering the six different areas of life, it’s time to make goals to become successful in every area of your life. This can be done using the following three steps:
1) Think about your goals, and what you would like to achieve in each area of your life.
2) Envision them in your mind and see them as clearly as you can, imagine yourself as what it would be like if you achieved each goal.
3) Write your goals down and read them each day, so you remember your goals and can move forward towards reaching them.
By knowing what your definition of success is, and how you are going to become successful in every area of your life, you can take the lessons, tips, and strategies you learn and apply them to earn the success you deserve. So what if, after continuing to ponder over thoughts, nothing quite seems to fit and you still aren’t sure what your goals are? Take a break from the idea, and visit the topic again in a few weeks. In the meantime, just remember that if you walk long enough —in this case, if you consistently work hard — you’re sure to get somewhere.
