“Being different is good; embrace it.” – Simon Cowell
If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you can read text that is written in English. If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you are human. You have probably felt happiness, sadness, excitement, sorrow, despair, and delight. You see the same sun and moon as the other people who inhabit the earth, just like you. In many ways, we are all the same. In this sense, we should treat each other kindly. Our similarities remind us that we all hold common themes. Meanwhile, the statement would be false if I were to say all humans are exactly the same. Fortunately, we do have differences. After all, that’s what helps make life interesting. So how are we different?
We all have experiences of some kind on this earth. Our perceptions of these experiences are different. What one individual envisions as a nightmare, another individual might imagine as a luxury. Multiple people can be involved in the same situation, yet honestly recite the story differently. Different interpretations of the same story come from our different perceptions and views, which can be traced back to a combination of the experiences, perspectives, memories, and emotions from our past.
Each person works slightly differently too. People may use some of the same medicine, but how well or long it works can vary from person to person. People eat food for nutrients, but different people eat different food depending on cost, convenience, access, preferences, health conditions and beliefs.
It’s easy to crave a “one size fits all” solution. Whether you are trying to decide what to have for lunch or where to establish your living space, there are several options available to choose from. How we choose partially depends on our preferences and what works for us and our current situation.
Similarly, success works the same way. There is no one solution to success because different people have a different definition of success. Even if we all had the same definition, we each might have a different strategy as to what works best for you. One of the reasons it is hard to achieve success is because there are so many ideas, options, and opinions available. We want to pick the right one, and once we think we know what the right one is, we might force ourselves to use that strategy because we think it’s the best. If you gave the strategy a fair chance, and it still doesn’t resonate with you, maybe you need to find a different option that does.
I have intentionally written about different topics, in regards to success, for multiple reasons. Success doesn’t just have one method, it requires a combination of multiple different habits, mindsets, beliefs, and strategies that may even adapt over time. Also, in recognition that everyone is different, I want my posts to be different. Not every post may resonate with you and that’s okay. Perhaps you might find one more useful later on in life as your experiences and situations change. If not, that’s OK too. Different posts are written in hopes that you find one that speaks to you. Maybe one resonates with you to the extent that you adopt the strategy and personalize it to your own situation. These posts are written with the intention to serve you. To help you reach your best and to help you climb the steps to success.
If I have helped you, even in the slightest way, then my writing has been worthwhile. If not, I apologize but would like to thank you for reading anyways. I encourage you to stay with me, as my posts will continue to vary in suggestions and topics. If you have a topic you would like me to write about, reach out to me here. I sincerely appreciate all my readers, and all feedback that I receive.
Remember, we are all different. We have different opinions, and by listening to others, we can learn from others. Just as I hope you have learned from me, I hope to learn from you. We all have lessons we can teach others, some by speaking or explaining, and other lessons are taught just by watching. By learning from others, we can grow and improve as individuals. When you feel lonely, remember that we have similarities. When you feel frustrated, remember that we have differences and ultimately our differences are what makes this world interesting. We can work on understanding these differences so we can learn and grow rather than get frustrated and angry.
If you get frustrated over your path to success, remember that we are all different. Just try a different strategy. Experiment with different ideas. Once you find something that works, stick with it and share it with others because a similar idea might help them too. We are all similar, yet we are all unique. Let’s embrace both the similarities and the differences, so we can all thrive together.
Think of experiences like a quarter. Two people can be facing each other, as the quarter vertically stands equidistant between both individuals. Let’s imagine neither person had ever seen a quarter before. If you were to ask each of them what they saw, one person would describe an effigy of George Washington’s head, while the other person would describe an effigy of an eagle. Both people are right, but they see different sides. Regardless of how much they argued, they would still be not be convinced of the other person’s argument.
Our experiences in life work the same way. People think we are all looking on the same side of a situation, but realistically we all have different perceptions. Most arguments stem from a difference in perspectives, and neither side takes a moment to consider. Next time you have views that are different from someone else, take a moment to pause. Stop and really listen to what they have to say. Do your best to understand what they are saying, and where they are coming from. After you are done listening, you might even begin to agree with them and change your mind. Or you may still favor your own beliefs and ideas, and that’s OK. You don’t have to agree with them, just listening is powerful in itself. If you learn something, even better. Humans love to be heard. Listen to others and appreciate them, it means more than you may realize.
