“The one thing we know about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.” — Jeff Rich
It’s almost that time again. The past couple of days have been fun, but now a multitude of tasks and projects are at your doorstep with more on the horizon. Many of us face this regularly, even weekly. It’s that time of the week again; it’s almost Monday morning. What if we could turn the dreaded Monday into something that is more manageable and enjoyable?
I’m happy to say, with practice, we can.
Often times our teachers, mentors, coaches, and society tell us to look ahead and plan for the future. We are afraid that if we don’t have a long list of goals, projects, and resolutions on our plate we will be perceived as unproductive and lazy.
There is nothing wrong with having goals, projects, or resolutions to work on. In fact, having goals often helps provide people with a sense of direction and focus. The problem comes when we buy into goals and plans to the point where we become obsessed with the future and neglect the present.
The future is pleasing because it is where our hopes, dreams, desires, and infinite possibilities take place. For many people, the future also houses their stressors and fears. When we get caught up in the future our goals and dreams become intimidating and overwhelming. We talk about the future as if it’s a promised land we are guaranteed to visit.
In reality, all we have is the present moment. All we have is right now.
So after you make your goals and plans for the future, pause and reflect on the present. Take life one day at a time. Think about what you can do today to become a better, happier, and healthier version of yourself. We crave easier solutions; so make life easier on yourself by focusing on today. Even the hardest days become more bearable when we remember to take one day at a time.
When you focus on one day at a time your perspective and views change. You are able to break down challenges into easier steps that you can complete with a greater sense of ease. So the next time a challenge tries to get the best of you, remember to take life one day at a time. By focusing on today, you can be happier today, and every day. Enjoy your day like it’s the best present you’ve ever received, and watch how your life will change.
