“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” — Maya Angelou
It seems like everyone always talks about passion. The topic has earned a lot of praise, but what does passion really mean? Why is everyone so obsessed with it? What does passion have to do with success, and why should we care? How does passion, or lack of it, influence our life?
Goals, habits, projects, and anything that is worth pursuing takes time, energy, and motivation. We tend to have a hard time reaching success because it’s difficult finding time, energy, and motivation to do what we need to do. Since time, energy, and motivation are all related, we can work on all of them simultaneously. For example, when we feel rushed and exhausted, we are less motivated to pursue a challenging goal. So how can all three of these tasks be addressed?
Be passionate. When we are passionate about something, it all seems to come together without our awareness. It’s as if the unconscious comes in and takes care of the work for us. Since we enjoy the task, it becomes much easier to not only work on it, but to spend additional time, energy, and thought on how to improve the task. Think about your own life. Does something come out better when you do it just to get it done or when you are really interested and intrigued by the task at hand? That is the power of passion.
Even if you do have the passion, there can still be barriers. So what are challenges that stop the passion, and how can we overcome these and continue to thrive?
Fear plays a big role in our lives and holds us back from reaching the goals we’d like to reach. This ultimately preventing us from living the life we want to live. If we let fear control our lives and abide by its rules, we will never get to do what we really care about. Confront your fears. Take them head on. Be mindful, and realize what you are fearful of. Take a look at the fear from a different perspective. Is it a legitimate fear that is likely to happen, or are we exaggerating the fear? What’s the worst that could possibly happen? Addressing our fears lets us gain a better awareness and control of the situation. If you have a fear of the unknown, learn more about it. Bridge the gap in your knowledge by reading more about the topic or asking someone who would be able to put your uncertainty at ease.
Perhaps we are passionate about a topic or an activity, but don’t find it realistic. Perhaps we are passionate about a specific job, but we don’t feel that it meets our economic needs. See if there is a way to work around it. With a little creativity, you might be able to shift the tables around and have it work in your favor.
If you are still not satisfied, see if you can ignite other passions. Passions are subject to change, and we can also help direct our sense of passion. Find good qualities in what you are doing. Why does it matter? What impact does it make on the people and world around you?
Being passionate helps you work on big tasks with an additional surge of energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. Instead of feeling like the world is working against us, it gives a sense of ease and even relaxation. When we cultivate our passion, we make it easier on ourselves and increase our level of happiness. Just an easier and happier life is something worth being passionate about, so give it a try today.
