Noise and silence both have value in life. With noise, we can have a conversation or listen to music, while observing and interacting with the world around us. Silence also has value in life, yet it’s not given much attention. Let’s talk about silence.
Silence is crucial. In order to be better listeners, we need to be silent while the other person is talking. In order to appreciate the music, we need to be able to be silent and hear sounds. Silence helps balance out noise, and this balance is what we are striving for.
Some people get so used to sounds, that silence scares them. In reality, it’s not the silence that scares them; it’s the truth that scares them. When we have noise, we have distractions. We have something to hide from our fears, and what we are worrying about. When there is silence, our minds tend to wander, and sometimes we don’t like where it ends up.
However, so many important things can also happen in silence. It’s a time when we can have self-reflection, meditate, come up with new ideas, and really be present with the world around us. It can also be a time to learn about ourselves and recharge. Interacting with others is great, and a crucial element for our well-being, but it’s also important to have time to yourself. By getting to know yourself, you will learn about your tendencies and thought patterns. Why do you act the way you do? How do your habits and behavior influence your life, and the people around you? By being in silence it’s easier to take a closer look at these questions, and others, that can help you get a closer look at life.
Try being in silence for a while. If you would prefer to stay busy while in silence, try reading a book, writing, or taking a walk. This is also a great opportunity to practice gratitude or think of loved ones. For best results, do this activity by yourself. When we have both silence and solitude, it’s much easier have a greater sense of awareness with the world around you and within yourself.
Sometimes silence is seen as something that is ‘bad’ or ‘awkward’ but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, silence is a beautiful thing, just like sound. When we can learn to appreciate silence, we can become more appreciative of the world around us. When we can learn how to be happy in solitude, we can be happy with ourselves and happy with our life. During a typical day, most people are so busy that they never give themselves a chance to just take a moment to be alone and in silence. Having this opportunity gives us a better perspective on our life. Appreciate the beauty of this opportunity, of taking time for yourself to rest and be at ease. Start out with just a couple minutes a day, then try longer periods of silence and solitude over time.
