“I’m really looking forward to, not more of the same, but a continual growth.” — Ben Harper
In April of 2016, I started Successful Steps. Reflecting on the first year of my blogging journey, it has been a very valuable experience that has taught me a lot about life. Each person’s blogging experience is unique, but here are the lessons that I have learned.
There have been many goals that I have achieved during my blogging journey so far. A big factor in setting goals is being consistent. Some days are going to be harder than others and that’s normal. I know a lot of people who get excited about a goal and set unrealistic expectations for themselves. It’s great to have that initial enthusiasm to get us going, but we also need to set up a schedule that we can sustain and keep. As Gretchen Rubin states, “What you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while.” Starting can be challenging, but once we get past the first few days, we build up the momentum that can help us move forward.
Social support is crucial
I’d like to take a moment to thank all of those who have supported me throughout this writing process. Thank you to my family and friends, whose support has kept me going when times get tough. To all of my readers, thank you for reading this blog. The fact that people have even read my content gives me great joy. When climbing the steps to success, find a support group. It might seem like common sense, but that doesn’t mean it’s common practice. Those in your support group are an excellent resource to go to find motivation, inspiration, ideas, and feedback. The more people you have to support you, the better. The WordPress community has been a very valuable resource for me, and I have made a lot of friends by interacting with fellow bloggers. Reach out and interact with people, you might be surprised who you become friends with. You can’t please everyone, but take in feedback from others and see what gives you value.
Keep looking forward
It’s important to be present in work and life but it is also important to think about the future. What will your next move be? How can you improve and step outside of your comfort zone? Always do your best at whatever you are doing, and look for ways to improve. Where do you want to be weeks, months, and years from now? Having an idea of the future will help provide a sense of direction. Your vision of the future doesn’t have to be set in stone, but spend some time coming up with some guidelines for yourself.
Remember what’s important
When we are working on our goals, there is so much that can distract us from our plan. Some of the distractions are clear, like social media, but there can also be subtle distractions, like busy work that just eats away at your time, energy, and attention. Being focused is a very valuable mindset, so make sure to use it on what matters most. Spend most of your time on whatever task will be most important to achieving your goal.
If there is only one thing you take away from this post, and this blog, let it be this: Contribute to others, practice self-development, and be happy.
Thank you, and cheers to another year of climbing these steps to success with you all. If you ever have any feedback, or just want to chat, feel free to contact me. Otherwise, best of luck on your journey to success.
