“Some people dream of success, while other people get up every morning and make it happen.” – Wayne Huizenga
A couple weeks ago, I was in a rut where I was falling behind and tasks were piling up. Since then, I have been able to quickly work on catching up. How did this happen?
We all have periods of time where things come up and we fall behind. The trick is catching back up again, and getting back into a routine. Let’s take a look at the typical day, starting with the morning.
Most people wake up exhausted. They press the snooze button a few times before grabbing their phone to check social media and email. After we get up, we are in a rush to get ready for work, sometimes skipping breakfast to save time.
I could keep going and state how people spend a lot of their time checking email and drinking caffeine to keep them going, but I think we all know where this is going. It’s time to break this ineffective routine by improving our mornings.
While breakfast is the most important meal, the morning is the most important part of the day. Mornings set the tone for how the rest of the day will go. Fortunately, we can help create a positive morning tone to cultivate a day full of focus and creativity. Consider experimenting with the following suggestions, and see how they impact your day:
Wake up earlier than normal
In order to properly set the stage for the rest of our day, we need to make the time in order to do so. Waking up earlier, and going to bed earlier, allows us to have that time. To avoid the temptation of pressing the snooze button or checking your phone, try setting your phone on the other side of the room. When it goes off, you are off to start the morning the right way.
Engage in a good, and fun, habit
Think about all the great habits that you want to start, but don’t think you have the time for. Want to exercise? Meditate? Write a novel? Read a book? Draw? Consider doing these in the morning instead of checking social media and email.
Work on something important
Having this uninterrupted time in the morning can be a great opportunity to work on an important task. Think about your current tasks and determine what’s most important. Work on this task before you get lost in the demands of the day. Being able to work on a task with high energy levels and minimal distractions produces fantastic results.
The Importance of Morning Routines
Morning routines are important because they start a domino effect for the rest of the day. When we are productive in the morning, it helps us stay productive for the rest of the day. Even if you don’t get much done the rest of the day, you already have a great set of accomplishments done for the day. As it gets later in the day, distractions and excuses seem to multiply. By getting things done early, we can avoid the distractions and be successful.
