“There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.” — Buddha
While trying to think of a topic to write about, I struggled. I had trouble even starting. I procrastinated because I didn’t think I could find something good enough, clever enough or wise enough to write publicly. Then, I realized something.
I was experiencing the same set of circumstances that stop most people from doing what they want to do. They want to talk to the cute girl or guy across the room, but they don’t have a clever pickup line. People want to get a degree, start up a business, or achieve a goal, but it seems too big and intimidating. People feel that they don’t have the resources, the experience, or the knowledge to start, so they don’t even try.
Let me remind you that most dreams, goals, and desires, are intimidating. They seem daunting, and near impossible to achieve. What most people forget is that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be. If our dreams, goals, and desires were easy, they wouldn’t be called dreams, goals, or desires. If they were easy to achieve, they would just be ordinary tasks that don’t bring the level of satisfaction that we crave.
A lot of people hide their skill until they feel confident in their abilities. In the meantime, they practice in secret, or only in front of a few trusted individuals. This isn’t a bad approach, but it gives people the false belief that we can pick up any skill we want to learn and quickly master it. It may sound ridiculous on the surface, but it proves true when we are experiencing frustration and lose patience in the learning process. Whenever we want to learn anything and grow as individuals, we need to remember that it takes time. Those who are an “overnight success” typically spend years practicing their skill before people began to notice.
Regardless of how big your dream is, how confident you are, or what you have to start off with, just start. Getting past the mental barriers we set for ourselves can be challenging, but it’s essential in moving forward and getting a better idea of what lies ahead. Start off small and work your way up. Take your time and work a little each day to help you get to where you want to go. After starting, everything begins to shift. Perhaps ideas begin to come to mind that you would have never thought of before starting. It doesn’t matter when you think of the ideas, or if you have the whole plan mapped out ahead of time. Just by starting, you are miles ahead of those who haven’t even tried.
Achieving your dream might not be easy, but as you gain progress the excitement starts to build too. The idea of even chasing after a dream can do wonders for the mind, body, and for your life, but you will never know that feeling until you start. Start today.
