We want to do it all. We want to be fit like Dwayne Johnson, rich like Bill Gates, smart like Albert Einstein, sing like Jennifer Lopez, and organize like Marie Kondo.
If we ‘hustle’ hard enough, we believe we can do it all. So we run around to do everything and be everywhere, every time. We move so fast that we don’t take a moment to understand this is not sustainable, practical, or realistic.
But this is what we want, right? It all pays off in the end, right?
Depends on what matters to you. Each action has a reaction and every decision has a trade-off.
Think about Dwayne Johnson, Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, Jennifer Lopez, and Marie Kondo. Each of these people spent countless hours getting to where they are today. They each have their own famous skill sets, but only after they focused on these skills, year after year, with the utmost priority.
There are plenty of others who have similar skill sets, yet never became famous. Through a unique blend of skills, luck, timing, and circumstances, a fraction of them become household names.
Consider the path they took to reach their current status.
Do you possess the same level of desire as them?
Are you chasing the fame they seek? Or the skills they’ve acquired?
Have you considered the trade-offs necessary to follow a similar trajectory?
Nothing is inherently wrong with fame, fitness, wealth, intelligence, singing or organizing. Each of these play a unique role in the world we live in.
My preference includes a combination of activities, and I don’t share the same obsessions as they do. Even this list of famous people don’t share the same preferences. Bill Gates doesn’t have the same muscle composition as Dwayne Johnson, and Marie Kondo doesn’t sing like Jennifer Lopez. Trying to match all their skill sets will only leave you chasing a path paved with dissatisfaction.
I workout to stay healthy, save money for the future, read books to learn more about life, and keep organized so I don’t have to spend a bunch of time looking for car keys. I don’t want to be like any of those stars. Instead, I want to listen to my own reasoning and determine what works best for me.
Today my preference is to be calm and open to whatever tomorrow brings. What’re your preferences?
