People love life hacks. Everyone is looking for subtle shifts to make a drastic difference in their daily lives.
You know what else everyone loves? Habits. We’re told they’re the building blocks for a better life. Once incorporated, they become automatic, magical rituals that can make us healthy, wealthy, and wise. In awe of these promises, we dive deeper.
What are the steps to creating a habit?
How long does it take to form a habit?
What are the habits of successful people?
Then we look for apps, books, and journals to confirm we’re on the “right” path. After all, what if we’re missing out on a habit or life hack to make things even easier?
There is so much enthusiasm around habit change we don’t even consider how they impact our lives. As the famous philosopher Aristotle conveyed thousands of years ago, too much of a good thing can have negative results. In other words, even hoarding habits or hacks can make us miserable.
We don’t need to rush to the alternative extreme and eradicate all habits. Understand that habits are part of human nature. The key is to achieve a better state of balance and tranquility by harnessing habits that improve our well-being.
In my case, habits were compulsively controlling my days. Each check on the tracker was treasured, and each miss made me more harsh on myself.
Are your habits helping you become happier, healthier, or more tranquil? Or are they barricading your path to personal betterment?
Adding more is not a necessity to live a better life. Sometimes letting go is the ultimate life hack.
