Mindful Moments

We spend so much time dwelling about the past or planning for the future that we spend very little time enjoying the present moment. The present is our only current reality; the past and future only exist in the mind.

Our past is simply a series of memories. No amount of reminiscence can bring it back and no amount of rumination can fix it. The mistakes from our past can only serve as a lesson if we learn from them and move on.

The future is a prediction of what we think will happen. Oftentimes, we do our best to predict and plan so we can come up with a strategy to bend the future to our will.

Yet the future is never fixed, it’s always changing. When we focus on that change, on the present moment, we come closer to a place of simplicity and peace.

The future might be scary, but we can handle the present moment.
The future might be unknown, but we know where we are right now.
We might not have it all figured out, but we can get through this moment.

This brings the complex back to simple. The scary back to serene. This turns mindlessness into mindfulness.

We don’t need a retreat or an app to be mindful. We can simply accept and embrace the present moment for what it is, without being attached to a particular outcome.

Nevertheless, we’ll fall back into thinking about the past or the future. When we catch ourselves wandering, we can come back to this moment. After all, life is just a series of moments, so let’s make them mindful moments.
