Declutter as the Days Go By

A friend of mine recently moved to another state. Anyone who has moved knows this is the moment one is truly confronted with all of their possessions. Boxes brimming with junk, chotskies cluttering closets, and sentimental items sitting in a sea of dust. He had over thirty years of stuff, with less than thirty days to confront it all.

Moving homes means new milestones, just like new years inspire new changes. Motivated to make this year better, we buy machines to help us build muscle and lose weight. After years of purchasing unhealthy foods, we buy weight loss programs to help us change years of unhealthy habits.

Yet eventually all of these purchases catch up with us, too. Whether it’s furnishings for the new home or fitness equipment for the home gym, each line item stacks up to a fat pile of debt. Desperate for change, we buy the app to track our finances or pay for the course to change our money habits.

Oftentimes, we seek rapid change after years of bad habits. Giving ourselves short timelines and big goals leads to frustration and failure.

Life didn’t drastically change overnight, it was the accumulation of thousands of tiny choices that changed the trajectory of one’s life. Yet our past doesn’t presuppose our future. We can change at any time, as long as we change one thing at a time.

One daily decision can develop the meaningful life you’ve desired. When we decide to declutter, we uncover what adds value. Don’t wait until it gets overwhelming. Declutter as the days go by, you’ll notice the difference.
