What Do You Expect?

Andrew Rocha — September 19, 2021

Expect

Expectations hold an enormous burden over our daily lives. They moderate our happiness, productivity, and our future.

When we expect everything to be seamless, we’ll be disappointed at setbacks.
Expect everything to come out perfect and we’ll be afraid to try something new.
If we expect our future to be dark and dim, we’ll let go of our motivation and momentum.

Conditional Marketed Love

Conditional Marketed Love

Every marketing team is managing a multibillion dollar demand: to make us part ways with our almighty dollars.

The command can be traced up the corporate ladder to the CEO, who is ultimately seeking to please their shareholders. Everyone wants the dollar and yet everyone is trying to take them from everyone else.

We part with our dollars in exchange for conditional marketed love.

Mindful Moments

We spend so much time dwelling about the past or planning for the future that we spend very little time enjoying the present moment. The present is our only current reality; the past and future only exist in the mind.

Our past is simply a series of memories. No amount of reminiscence can bring it back and no amount of rumination can fix it. The mistakes from our past can only serve as a lesson if we learn from them and move on.

Examine the Extra

Examine The Extra

My calendar was like a family-sized bag of skittles. It was packed, color coded, and optimized for efficiency. I used the apps, checked the boxes, read the books, and tried every tool I came across.

I felt compelled to be busy and productive. The extra obligations took up a lot of space in my life, pushing my well-being, relationships, and tranquility to the wayside.

Consumers use language to camouflage the clutter.

We call the material clutter names like tchotchkes, collector’s items, gifts, and souvenirs.

There is also other clutter that consumes our lives. This is often categorized as commitments, goals, habits, plans, responsibilities, obligations, and tasks.

Most children are given direction in the form of commands. Whether it’s to clean their room or finish their homework, these were the instructions imparted upon us.

Age invites us to take life into our own hands, yet we still seek guidance from others. We turn to self-help, online forums, and society to tell us what to do.

We’re All Reflections

Do you want what you want? Or do you want what others want?

A younger sibling mimics the desire of their older siblings, but we see similar results as adults.

30 Days From Now

Andrew Rocha — August 1, 2021

days

Every message on my phone will be gone 30 days from now.

This isn’t a flaw, it’s a setting on the iPhone.
This isn’t a catastrophe, it’s an intentional choice.

It started as a decision to save storage space on my phone, yet it led to much more.

A Radical Approach to Realizing What’s Matters Most

Andrew Rocha — July 25, 2021

matters most

In a sea of goals, habits, and tasks, how do we decipher what matters most? When we’re drowning in options, how do we choose where to start?

One of my favorite approaches is to cut my possibilities in half.

Why I Don’t Stick to Goals or Habits Anymore

Andrew Rocha — July 18, 2021

I don’t stick to goals or habits anymore.

I used to do this because society and goal experts told me to do it. Their advice resonated on the surface, and I followed it. After I began to critically think about sticking to goals or habits, my perspective began to shift.
