“Love yourself. It is important to stay positive because beauty comes from the inside out.” — Jenn Proske
So often in life we are so busy running after things that we admire, that we completely miss the things we already have. This is true with material possessions and our relationships, but also ourselves.
How often have you beaten yourself up for the number on the scale, but neglected the kindness that others appreciate and love about you? There is nothing wrong with seeking to improve yourself, but if you are only looking at the negative aspects of your life then you are still not getting the full picture.
By the end of the day, sometimes we are so tired and irritable that we can only think of the bad things that happened, rather than all the good things that also happened. Maybe we focus on how much we have left to do, rather than how much we already did.
This advice seems obvious, but often times it holds true in our daily lives. Not only does this hurt our self-esteem, but it puts a strain on our relationships, productivity, and personal growth. If we have a low self-esteem, how are we supposed to be a good role model for our friends, coworkers, and family members? If we only see negative qualities in others how are we supposed to develop trust in others, maintain friendships, and interact with the world?
If we neglect the hidden gems, the joys of life, we are neglecting the potential motivation we can gain from celebrating our small wins throughout the day.
Today, acknowledge the hidden gems in your life. See the small acts of kindness given to you, or others throughout the day. Remember the great qualities about yourself, and how you can use your strengths to help make the world around you a better place. When thinking about self-improvement, think of it as a way of helping and loving the self rather than beating yourself up for mistakes. Here are some additional tips to find the hidden gems:
1. Three good things
At the end of the day, think about three good things that day. Not only will it help you put a positive note on the end of the day, but it trains your brain to think positively.
2. Keep a ‘done list’
If you keep a ‘to-do’ list, think about also keeping a ‘done’ list to acknowledge the work you have completed throughout the day. As the ’to-do’ list begins to shrink, your ‘done list’ will grow and encourage you to keep going. Just this simple act might help improve your mood throughout the day, as it gives you a nice reward as you move about your day.
3. See the good
Acknowledge the world around you, for all that it is. Embrace good weather, family, friends, and kind gestures. Remember the good things in life, but also soak them in. After all, if people dwell on stressors in their life, why can’t people also soak in the good things that happen?
Finding The Gems
The more we practice finding the hidden gems in our life, the easier it gets and the more gems that we will see. It is a truly transformative process that will change how you see your life, and the world around you. Seek the hidden gems around you today and every day.

Andrew,
Awesome post! “Finding the hidden gems” is something that I’ve really been focusing on in 2017. Perspective and gratitude are two things that I often think about when talking about self-esteem and the mindset of seeking the best in others.
I really like your suggestion of keeping a “done list”. I’m big on journals and to-do-lists, but keeping a done list would really help on the days that seem to just be out of our favor.
Cheers friend, and all the best!

Even if I don’t write it down, I often try to remind myself of what I’ve done rather than focus on my inabilities.
